What is the best time to eat fruit?

Studies have shown that the best time to eat just fruit is in the morning or when you have an empty stomach.

The optimal time to eat fruit as a snack is within 30 minutes before or after a meal.

But you’re probably wondering:

Why is an empty stomach the most beneficial when eating fruit?

When you have not eaten for a while, your digestion is quick and efficient.

Your body uses a specific type of enzyme to digest fruits. When these enzymes do their job without other foods in the way, your body processes fruit most efficiently. Thus, allowing maximum absorption of nutrients, fiber, and sugar.

Why should you try to avoid eating fruit with other food groups?

If you eat fruit in combination with other foods, it can be held in the stomach for too long. This can cause the fruit ferment in the gut.

Here’s the kicker:

Fermentation can cause bloating, heartburn, diarrhea, and burping. Along with other discomforts, you may feel after eating. It is important to eat fruit at the right times because if you go years of eating fruit at the wrong time, it could cause worse health problems later in your life.

When should you eat a lot of fruit?

When you do eat fruit, is a good idea to take advantage of the digestive system and eat a lot of it.

My favorite time to eat a lot of delicious fruit is right after I wake up in the morning. I typically eat an apple, orange, and a Kiwi. Later in the morning, at least an hour after I eat the fruit, I will eat breakfast.

If you aren’t a morning person:

You can eat a lot of fruit about an hour after lunch as a snack. I usually eat dinner around 6 PM. If I have my fruit snack around 3-4 PM, it will allow enough time for the fruit to digest before dinnertime.

Now you might be wondering:

For people who workout, what is the best time to eat fruit?

Fruit is great before a workout.

Fruits can give you a rush of energy from the plentiful sugar and carbohydrates. It also provides you essential vitamins.

Are there any situations when you should not eat fruit on an empty stomach?

If you have prediabetes, diabetes or are sensitive to acidic foods, you must be careful when eating fruit on an empty stomach.

Prediabetics are at risk of developing diabetes. A prediabetic blood sugar level in the morning is around 100 to 125 mg/dL. If you have prediabetes, digesting fruits high in carbohydrates may be difficult. Eating fruit on an empty stomach can make a prediabetics blood sugar levels get high, which is terrible for health.

People with diabetes:

A person with diabetes has a blood sugar level of 126 mg/dL or higher. A diabetic’s body does not produce enough insulin to keep blood sugar in check. Diabetic’s blood sugar levels, when fasted, are high. If someone with diabetes eats fruit that is high in carbohydrates, it can cause their sugar level to get to dangerous levels. People with diabetes must monitor their fruit intake carefully.

High carbohydrate fruit products to avoid:

Fruit juices – Fruit juices are low in fiber. Making it tough for the body to digest sugar and carbs.

Dried fruits – Dried fruits typically have added sugar and are high in carbs.

Canned fruits – Canned fruits usually have preservatives and added sugar and are high in carbs.

Many fruit products have added artificial sugar or high fructose corn syrup which is awful for your health. I have seen some juices that have these additives that claim to have health benefits. I have seen some apple juices that have more sugar than coke!

High acidity in stomach:

Some people are sensitive to acidic foods. Many fruits have high acidity. Some common fruits are oranges, lemons, limes and grapefruit. Also, some berries like strawberries or blueberries have high acid levels. People with this problem should try not to eat fruit on an empty stomach or in the morning.

Stick to raw fruit. You can digest raw fruit better. Whole fruit will undoubtedly give you more health benefits than other forms of fruit.

If you are concerned that you may have one of these issues, talk to your doctor about fruit. Everyone has a different situation.
